North American Auto Show

First day impression of the North American Auto Show.

GM And The Electricdrive.  GM is getting real about the electricdrive.  According to Lutz, building on the success of its Voltec platform, the company says it will develop a pure electric vehicle, EV.  The question is now, what to call it?  After calling its series plug-in hybrid, PHEV Volt an extended range electric vehicle, EREV, GM will have to find a way to name its EV.  In order to make it stand aside from other EVs, we suggest, BEV, Beyond EV, TRTEV, the real thing EV, EBEV extended battery EV.  The list goes on…

e-Tron Is A Model.  If you thought Audi’s e-Tron was a stand alone EV, guess again.  A new e-Tron is unveiled at the show, a smaller, lighter e-Tron called the Mini E R8.  Remember what we covered a while back?  3,000lbs, of which 900 of batteries, the 0 to 60 mph, or 0 to 100 km/h is achieved in 5.9 seconds.  The speed is electronically limited to 125mph, 200 km/h and the range is bumped up to 155 miles or 250 kilometers.  With 204 hp and a 45 kW lithium-ion battery pack, those are impressive numbers.  As to when is the production expected, Audi will decide at a later stage.

Nissan Leaf Deposits.  Nissan will start taking deposits for its Leaf this spring.

And we need to go get some sleep or liquid courage…
